Columbia Southern University Unit 2 Medicinal Marijuana Journal Entry

Unit 2

Instructions

More states in the United States are legalizing the use of medicinal marijuana. Some states have laws that classify a person impaired to drive if an illegal substance or its metabolites are in the body. Marijuana, when it undergoes biotransformation, metabolizes into two different metabolites, Hydroxy-THC and Carboxy-THC. The first causes impairment while the second, although it does not cause impairment, stays in the body for an extended period of time. Consider how marijuana’s biotransformation may vary depending on the individual and the varying ability of marijuana’s metabolites to cause impairment. Do you think that laws that prosecute regardless of the type of metabolite are justified to prosecute for a driving while intoxicated (DWI)? Have you changed any ideas you used to have on this topic?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.

Unit 3

Instructions

In 2013, the FDA set limits for arsenic in apple juice. In 2016, the FDA proposed a limit for arsenic in infant rice cereal. Consider the toxicological effects of arsenic on the body. Do you think foods containing arsenic are a major concern? Reflect on if you would be concerned about consuming these foods or feeding them to a child. Do you think the FDA is sufficiently protecting the food supply in the United States from arsenic concerns? Why, or why not?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.

Unit 4

Instructions

With the burning of fossil fuels  comes the release of many pollutants that cause health concerns such as the release of particulate matter on the respiratory system. Cases of asthma and COPD are on the rise. Do you think more environmental regulations are necessary to decrease this particulate matter? Why, or why not? Reflect on if you think there is a balance between reducing emissions and keeping costs down for industry.

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.

Unit 5

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer rates are on the rise. Do you think that the safety and health field places enough emphasis on protecting outdoor workers from UV exposure? Reflect on what you think should be done to protect workers.

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.

Unit 6

Instructions

Prior to reading the unit lesson and the required reading, did you have any knowledge of neurotoxicity? Reflect on how you might use this information in a future position to help guard against occupational exposure to neurotoxins? Do you think enough is done to educate workers on the effects of chemicals they may be exposed to?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.

Unit 7

Instructions

Household cleaning products are some common solvents that you may be in contact with on a regular basis. Based on what you have learned about solvents, discuss a specific solvent that you commonly use. Do you think the cleaning product label properly warns you of the toxic effects of the solvent? Now that you know a little more about solvents, do you think there should be more information on the cleaning products? Why, or why not?

Your journal entry must be 200 words
